Last night for D&D, I made a variant of Red Beans and Rice we call “‘Drunken’ Red Beans and Rice.” It combines a classic recipe with an interesting twist: hydrating the beans with red wine instead of water. The red wine flavor comes out nicely in the beans after cooking.

So, a few of you did (much to my dismay) notice that the server kind of vanished over the weekend. Not having arranged for a backup solution after moving Stasis (my server which this domain, among others, is hosted on) fated me to a bizarre and catastrophic hard drive failure. I got lucky, though, for only the OS was blown away. 98% of the data (emails, websites and database tables) remained shockingly intact, but the entire server configuration folder was reduced to a 1135 byte file and two out of my three custom spam handling scripts got destroyed as well. *sigh* So, most of the weekend was spent rebuilding the server from scratch with a new hard drive. The good news is, by Sunday morning everything was functioning again and all of the email backed up on Andy’s server started flowing into mine (faster than I expected even, the second DNS came online, everything exploded with activity!) Sincere apologies for anybody affected by the outage. I hope to have a backup solution tested and in place by this weekend. I just have to dig out my spare network card…

Tablet devices are a thing for me. I’m going to muse for a bit on the topic, because it comes up a lot in my mind, discussions and house, and I was talking to Sue earlier about it today. In particular, I spend a lot of time thinking about the operating system options out there.

When I break things, clearly I go straight for the pricey shit. We finally got to order the part we needed last night for the princely sum of $140ish shipped. Ouch. At least the machine will be fixed by Friday evening, provided the part ships today. Press pot coffee is good and all, but we seriously . . . → Read More: Expensive Taste

Recently, I have become fascinated with slaw. I have been making Broccoli slaw with a cranberry mustard dressing, but I have been trying it our with Cabbage.
The challenge tonight: To use up a large head of cabbage, 3 ears of sweet corn, and blue cheese hanging out in the fridge, and make a good side dish . . . → Read More: Cole slaw

So, I have a computer game I’m going to work on as a personal project over time. Initially it was going to be an Android game, but I need to step back and work in a more familiar environment first, so it will start out its life as a PC game. If you’re interested, and want to give feedback, follow through the link below to the rest of the post and sound off. I’m going to muse on the implementation and other topics.
Eventually, I may spin off the discussion and progress reports into their own blog, particularly if enough interest is generated in the game, since it goes slightly beyond the intended scope of our main blog.

You’ll note the new theme, Aimee found one she likes. We’ll see if she continues to like it.
Good weekend overall: a brief visit from Ken, Aimee’s PC got upgraded, much StarCraft 2 was played in Casa Dundon, and Mike’s D&D game on Sunday was very fun as always.

So, we have ourselves a really shiny Bezzera BZ02 espresso machine, the “RPM” variant which is the plumbed-in kind. It’s a great machine, but it’s also really sensitive it seems. Shortly after we got the machine last year, it developed a leak. Continue reading Adventures in Italian Espresso Machines
